November in Guilin was surprisingly lovely this year. I guess it realized that it’s annual harvest time of our taros and sweet potatoes in Lipu, which is about 105 km away from downtown Guilin. The interesting experience of harvesting and the delicious taros and sweet potatoes of last year still engrave on everybody’s mind, so all of us were full of enthusiasm when hearing it’s the harvest time again! Thanks to the convenient road network, 1.5 hours’ drive is enough to take us from Guilin to the farmland near the Silver Cave in Lipu County.

Wedding Customs of Ethnic Minorities in Guangxi

As one of China's five ethnic autonomous regions (Guangxi, Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia - equivalent to five provinces), Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is in fact the habitation of many Chinese ethnic groups, including the Han and 11 indigenous ethnic minorities among which the Zhuang accounts for majority. Having been being influenced by the outside world, more than more youth generation of the minorities are accepting modern lifestyle and concepts, fortunately, their peculiar ethnic customs are still well passed on in their remote hometown. In this post we would like to discover some traditional wedding customs in Guangxi.
As one of the key travel agencies in the region, Guilin Tianyuan International Travel Service Co. LTD was invited by the Ancient Zhuang Village Scenic Area (龙脊古壮寨梯田观景区), one of the main scenic areas of Dragons Backbone Rice Terraces of Longsheng, to this years Customers Thanks Meeting on November 15. With great honor, Carrie, one of my colleague also in English Department, and I had the pleasure to represent the company to participate the meeting with over 150 friends from other travel agencies and had a sightseeing of this new developed scenic spot which was opened just in June this year.

Yet another aspect of traditional Chinese culture I find myself completely enthralled by is ancient Chinese religion and philosophy.With a history as long as China’s, there’s little wonder how such a wide variety of colorful belief systems and practices have manifested over the ages and embedded themselves in the heart of traditional society.To be sure, each has taken shape in popular culture in their own distinct way and offer unique perspectives on the Chinese way of life, although the philosophic doctrine I seem to personally resonate with is Daoism (or Taoism).

As an avid traveler I find great joy living in a large country like China.With an incredible variety of terrain and an equally diverse cultural landscape, the amount of traveling possibilities is seemingly endless.While I certainly cannot claim to have been to even half of the more famous cities and sites, I have at least been to some of the key regional destinations such asBeijing in the north,Chengdu in the west,Shanghai in the east, and of course, Guilin in the south.However, of all the locations I have personally traveled to in China, my favorite is probably the least known of all: Guangxi Autonomous Regions Weizhou Island (涠洲岛).

My Trip to the Guilin Tea Institute

Last Friday I had the privilege of visiting the Tea Science and Research Institute of Guilin, Guangxi (广西桂林茶叶科学研究所). Through a friend of a friend, a couple of my buddies and I were able to spend a beautiful autumn afternoon on a special tour of the Tea Institutes facilities and fields. Whats more, as a self-proclaimed tea enthusiast, I was particularly excited for the outing and could not have thought of a better way to enjoy the local scenery and weather.
