Last month I went Daxu with a group from UK. Actually they only plan to stay in Guilin for two nights with full activities, but the second day the Li River got big flooding, the cruise was canceled. People cant stay in the hotel doing nothing. So I recommended they go to visit the Ancient Town of Daxu.
For those who don't know what a strawberry day is, it is a current term that I have put into creation that refers to not a good but also not a bad day. You know, sometimes when you eat a strawberry it's nice and sweet, and some times when you eat them they're sour as can be, and sometimes you get one that's just in between sweet and sour, and it's just good enough to not spit out. That's what a strawberry day is, it's in between good and bad. And it just so happens that on this strawberry day, I went strawberry picking.
When youre wooing a girl there seems to some socially accepted steps to do so. You know, first off talk to her, and later get her phone number after accidently bumping into her (after waiting for said accidental opportunity for an hour.) Than after a quick bit ask her out, give some flowers, yata yata yata and so on. Now maybe subconsciously I dont know what these steps are, or maybe I just dont like them, so in short to woo a girl I take her on a trip, and then cant find a bus home and end up hitchhiking in the back of a farmers truck with her and a pig. YepIm smooth.
The rain kept drizzling down and our hiking was on the march. It took two and half an hour to hike from the Wumaling Ancient Path to Xiong Village. We left Lower Wuma Village at 11:00 and our lunch was arranged on a ground at the ancient path at noon. As you can see in the picture, our meal was more like a simple picnic, but my fellows were with great relish and still immersed in the excitement for the following challenge in physical strength. After one hours time of lunch and rest, we restarted the rest of the scheduled hiking, which was apparently harder to go on. On the way we were discussing how caravans of the old time overcame this challenge.
1. Daxu Ancient Town (大圩古镇), Guilin Daxu Ancient Town is the first to be mentioned as one of the four most famed ancient towns in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Due to its preferable location on the northern bank of Li River, some 23 km southeast of Guilin, Daxu Ancient Town enjoys a humid subtropical climate with beautiful sceneries. Originally built in 200AD with a history over 1800 years, the town already got its fame as one of the four fair towns in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The preserved residences and alleyways we can see today in the village are mostly in the styles of Ming and Qing (1636-1911) dynasties with aged black bricks and grey tiles, standing on the old stone-paved streets.
If you think Guilin scenery is more natural, no more cultural or historical, there is a place which you must see. It is Daxu Ancient Town, which is located to the southwest of Guilin, on shore of the Li River. It takes about 40 minuets by driving from Guilin. So, many Guilin citizens like to diver car to enjoy weekend in this area. In the mean time, Daxu town now is a big town in Guilin area, and its market is very famous, many people just go to Daxu town on purpose during market time. But it is a little hard for me to count the date, as the market date is based on Chinese lunar calendar. P.S.: In Chinese, Xu means local market, so, Daxu means big local market, very cute name for the ancient town....
