TV-Commercial for Guilin
2009-05-19 | Life in Guilin
Last Thursday my colleague Sandy came to me and asked if I were interested in acting in a TV-advertisement for Guilin. A friend of her had asked her for a foreign actress. Of course I agreed to this idea, because I thought it could be a funny thing to do.
Fubo Hill with Robbie
2009-05-05 | Life in Guilin
On Sunday afternoon I met my colleague Robbie to take the bus to Fubo Hill, which is located at the bank of Li River. After you enter the front gate you find yourself in a small park is dominated by Fubo Hill, which soars above the whole surrounding area.
My National Labor Day at Merryland
2009-05-05 | Life in Guilin
As in many countries, also in China the 1st of May is celebrated as the National Labor Day. This means that people have a national holiday and also our office was closed. I and some friends of mine had decided to go to Merryland, a theme park which is located about 69km away from Guilin. In the morning we met and went there by car, which took us 1 1/2 hours. The weather was good and so all of us were looking forward to this day! ...
An Afternoon at Hospital
2009-04-22 | Life in Guilin
It started one week ago, on Monday: I had an odd feeling around my left breast. Sometimes stabling while breathing, sometimes a dragging pain, sometimes I felt my heart beating, sometimes everything was all right. Especially when I was among others and enjoying myself, I was fine. But however, I kept thinking about it and started to worry. Even if I disliked the idea of going to a doctor who did not have German hygienic standards and equipment, I asked my colleague You Jia Jia to go to hospital with me on Thursday. After lunch we took a taxi to Guilin People's Hospital, which is close to the Sheraton Hotel.
My visit of Elephant Trunk Hill
2009-04-22 | Life in Guilin
When I got up on Sunday, it was raining badly. This would keep me inside all day, I thought disappointed. But I was lucky: Weather in Guilin can change very soon! At 2pm the clouds had disappeared and the sun was shining warmly. So I hurried up to buy some water (especially in spring and summer I advise you to always have one with you!) and take the bus downtown. Then I walked down the whole Binjiang Road, which is build along the Li River. Protected by lots of old, big trees, the view on the river is picturesque. ...
A Visit of Seven Star Park
2009-04-14 | Life in Guilin
As I am living in Guilin for half a year now, I think I should get to know my cultural surrounding as well. So, last weekend I decided to go to Seven Star Park spontaneously. Compared to other prices, the entrance fee (35Yuan) is quite high. But already when I was walking along the flower bridge, I knew it was worth its money. I was faced with beautiful scenery: beautiful hills, the river and alleys. Everything was of a beautiful green. First I went to the old Qixia Temple, which originates from Tang Dynasty, and was overwhelmed by the Buddha statues and the silence everywhere. I found it a very peaceful place and took some time to have a rest. Unfortunately the only monks I saw were asleep. I would have loved to see them praying or practicing other things. The altars were emblazed and incense sticks were enlightened. All in all it was easy to forget the city outside and find some moments for myself. ...
A weekend in Yangshuo
2009-04-08 | Life in Guilin
When my friend Flo called me to tell me that he would come and visit me for the weekend, I was very excited. We decided to visit Yangshuo, a city close to Guilin, as the nature there was said to be very beautiful. So on Saturday morning we took the cruise ship to get to Yangshuo. The tour was during four hours and included a Western-Chinese lunch buffet. As the sun was shining we spent most of the time on top of the boat to enjoy the mountains surrounding us and to take pictures. It was a very enjoyable time. Arriving in Yangshuo, we nearly were overrun by elderly women offering bamboo boat tours, flowers or bike tours (Wo bu yao! means I dont want that!). ...

2009-04-08 | Life in Guilin
Already being in Guilin for one week, I so far got to know the district of the office and once went to the center with my colleagues.Seven Star District is very cute, and by bus you reach the center within 10 minutes. However, it is not a typical place for tourists to visit and therefore I am stared at nearly all the time when being on the street....
