First high-speed railway in Xinjiang to operate this year

A map shows the high-speed railway which is expected to begin operation this year to connect Lanzhou in Gansu Province with Urumqi in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The Lanxin High-speed Railway will wind into neighboring Xining in Qinghai Province before connecting the two cities.

 

Trail testing run of the Lanxin High-speed Railway started on June 3 in Xinjiang, marking a countdown to formal operations of the first high-speed railway in this region.

 

With the length of 1,776km, the new line linking the northwest Chinese provincial capital cities of Lanzhou in Gansu Province and Urumqi in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is expected to begin operations at the end of the year. By then, travel time between Lanzhou and Urumqi will be cut from the current 16 hours to 9 hours or less.
