created: 2010-02-04
The Gannan Grassland in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, southwestern Gansu Province, was chosen as the fourth on the list of China's six most beautiful grasslands.
The Organizing Committee of the event commented on the grassland, saying that the charm of Gannan does not only come from the itself, but also from the profound Tibetan features.
The grassland, covering an area of 37.58 million mu (2.51 million ha), lies primarily in Gansu's Maqu, Xiehe and Luqu counties.
The major scenic spots there include the Gahai Lake, the largest fresh lake on the grassland and an important wetland on eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Labrang Monastery, one of the six major monasteries for Tibetan Buddhism and the Langmu Monastery, which is almost 300 years old.
The grassland is not fit for growing crops as it is located at a higher altitude and with a lower temperature. However, with luxuriant grass and abundant water resources, the grassland is a natural grazing land. Therefore, Tibetans living there engage mainly in animal husbandry.
