Guilin Weather

Guilin is located at a low latitude and has a subtropical monsoon climate. The city enjoys mild temperatures, abundant rainfall, four distinct seasons, long summers, and short winters. The Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu once praised Guilin's climate with the line: "Though the Five Ridges are all hot, Guilin alone is pleasant." Guilin receives little snowfall in winter and has flowers throughout much of the year, making it suitable for travel in every season.

Temperature Overview

Guilin's annual average temperature is approximately 19°C. The hottest months are July and August, with average temperatures of around 28°C. The coldest period is January and February, when the average temperature is approximately 9°C.

The frost-free period lasts about 309 days per year. Annual average precipitation ranges from approximately 1,888 to 1,949 millimeters. Northerly winds prevail throughout the year, and the annual average relative humidity is approximately 76%.

Seasonal Characteristics

● Spring, March-May: Temperatures gradually rise and rainfall increases. The average temperature is approximately 18°C, and May is one of the wettest months of the year. During periods of continuous spring rain, mist lingers along both banks of the Li River and the surrounding mountains appear and disappear through the haze, creating an ink-wash-painting effect. This is an excellent season for viewing the misty Li River.

● Summer, June-August: Hot and humid, with average temperatures of approximately 27-29°C. Extreme temperatures may exceed 38°C. Rainfall is particularly concentrated in June, which marks the annual peak of precipitation. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, after which the sky often becomes especially clear.

● Autumn, September-November: Dry, clear, and pleasant, making it the most comfortable season of the year. September has the lowest rainfall, with abundant sunshine and clear skies. It is ideal for photography and outdoor activities.

● Winter, December-February: Damp and cool, with relatively little rainfall. The average temperature is approximately 10-11°C, and light snow may occasionally occur. There are fewer tourists and hotel prices tend to fall, making winter suitable for off-peak travel.

Best Time to Visit

Guilin can be visited year-round, but March-May and September-November generally offer the most comfortable weather.

April-May: The Longji Rice Terraces are being filled with water, creating mirror-like surfaces that reflect the sky. This is one of the best periods for viewing the terraces.

Late September to mid-October: The terraces turn golden with ripening rice, making this a prime season for photography.

Winter, December-February: Although temperatures are lower, visitor numbers and travel costs are also reduced. Special winter experiences include rime-covered scenery at Mao'er Mountain and skiing at Quanzhou Tianhu.
