Guilin Travel Tips
Guilin is a well-developed international tourist destination. The following practical information can help make your journey smoother and your experience more authentic.
Best Time to Visit
Guilin is suitable for travel throughout the year, but April-May and September-November generally have the most comfortable weather.
From April to May, visitors can enjoy the misty, ink-wash scenery of the Li River and the mirror-like Longji Rice Terraces during the irrigation period. From September to October, the golden rice fields of Longji are at their most picturesque, while the weather is generally clear and pleasant. Winter brings fewer visitors and lower costs, making it suitable for off-peak travel.
Clothing and Essential Equipment
Clothing: In spring and autumn, layered clothing is recommended-for example, a short-sleeved shirt with a light jacket that can be added in the cooler mornings and evenings. In summer, wear short sleeves or quick-drying clothing and pay attention to sun protection. Winters are damp and chilly, so bring a warm coat and sweater.
Footwear: When visiting the Li River or hiking in the mountains, visitors may encounter wet and slippery stone paths. Wear non-slip sports shoes and avoid flat-soled cloth shoes.
Sun and Rain Protection: Guilin receives strong sunlight and ultraviolet radiation. Sunscreen, a sun hat, and sunglasses are essential. During the rainy season and periods when showers are frequent, each traveler should carry a lightweight raincoat or folding umbrella.
Transportation Advice
Arriving by High-Speed Rail: Guilin Railway Station is the preferred option because it is centrally located and within walking distance of Elephant Trunk Hill and East-West Alley. Guilin North Railway Station is the second-best option. Guilin West Railway Station is relatively remote and should generally be considered only as a backup. When traveling to Yangshuo, visitors may take a train directly to Yangshuo Railway Station and then transfer to the county center or nearby scenic areas.
Arriving by Air: Liangjiang International Airport is approximately 28 kilometers from downtown. Visitors may take an airport shuttle bus, which costs about RMB 25, or use a ride-hailing service to reach the city.
Getting Around the City: Guilin has no subway system. Public buses, shared electric scooters, and ride-hailing services are the main transportation options. In Yangshuo, renting an electric scooter is recommended. The usual rental price is approximately RMB 40-50 per day, making it a convenient way to explore the Ten-Mile Gallery and the Yulong River.
Accommodation Recommendations
Downtown Guilin: The areas around Xiufeng District or Two Rivers and Four Lakes are recommended. Many attractions, including Elephant Trunk Hill and East-West Alley, are within walking distance, and some hotels offer views of the night scenery.
Yangshuo: The area around West Street is lively at night. Travelers with elderly people or children may prefer accommodation outside the central West Street area or along the Yulong River, where the surroundings are quieter and more comfortable, with pastoral landscapes and karst peaks visible from the windows.
Safety and Health Advice
Bamboo Rafting and Water Safety: Always wear a life jacket when taking a bamboo-raft trip. Children under 1 meter tall, adults over 70, and pregnant women should choose alternative sightseeing options. In the event of rainfall or rising water levels, follow the scenic area's instructions and move away from the water immediately when necessary.
Mosquito Protection: When visiting mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, and lakes in summer, wear light-colored long sleeves and trousers and carry mosquito repellent.
Respect for Ethnic Customs: When visiting villages inhabited by ethnic minority communities, respect local customs, lifestyles, and beliefs. Adapting to local practices will help ensure a more meaningful cultural experience.
Helpful Pre-Trip Reminders
Make Reservations in Advance: Elephant Trunk Hill is free of charge, but visitors can make a real-name reservation through the official WeChat account of Guilin Xiangshan Scenic Area. During the peak season, bamboo-raft trips on the Yulong River should preferably be booked online one to three days in advance.
Bring Identification: Carry your identity card. Children should bring a household registration booklet or other valid identification. Students and senior citizens should carry the relevant discount certificates to access applicable concessions.
Travel During Off-Peak Hours: For popular attractions, arriving before 08:00 is recommended. Morning light is softer and visitor numbers are usually lower, providing a better sightseeing experience. During the hotter afternoon hours, visitors may return to their hotel to rest and go out again in the evening.
