Longsheng County in Guilin is well-known for marvelous terraced rice fields and rich cultures of ethnic minorities. Locals respect the land they living by and generally express their deep reverence through various activities, many festivals are consequently celebrated in the area throughout a year. Combing Rice Seedling Festival is one among these colorful activities. As a traditional folk festival in Longji Rice Terraces scenic area, it is held around the Grain in Ear (one of the 24 solar terms) every year.
It is generally known that China is a large agricultural country, though numerous peasants flood into cities to seek jobs these years, people in Longsheng County of Guilin hold fast to the land and still pay much attention to agriculture. Every year the Spring Ploughing Festival is held in Dragon's Backbone (literally Longji) Rice Terraces Scenic Area of Longsheng, attracting visitors from around the world.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival, comes each year on lunar calendar August.15th. This year, it falls on Monday, Sept.8th, but people have the day off because it is a public holiday in China.The Mid-Autumn Festival is the most traditional festival in China just second to Spring Festival. To admire the beautiful full moon is the highlight of this festival. According to Chinese people, it is recommended to do it outdoors especially on a high site to obtain a broad vision.
China boasts multiple geographical conditions and climate. People sow in spring, cultivate in summer, harvest in autumn and store food in winter. This strict calendar has been applied for thousands of years. Though modern people stand off the nature with each passing day compare with agrarian age, to carry on ancestral life wisdom to arrange the diet has melted into Chinese’s genes. Depending on their rich experience, Chinese chefs search splendid food combination in the change of seasons.
China is a country with vast land and composed by 56 ethnic groups. Except the Han nationality which accounts for approximately 91.51% of the total population of China, other nationalities only accounts for 8.49%, and consequently the other 55 are called minority nationalities. Though the population of the other 55 ethnic groups is much fewer, their varied festivals account for about 70% of the total amount of China’s festivals, and these colorful festivals constitute an important part of Chinese culture and lives.
