On learning the news that bamboo rafting on Li River is officially permitted, Guilin Tianyuan International Travel Service Co.,LTD organized a field trip to the essence of Li River, the section of which we were going to cruise begins from Yangdi Pier to Xingping Landscape Area in Yangshuo. Another purpose is to investigate some restaurants and hotels in Yangshuo. As a member of its English department - VisitOurChina, I had the great honor to carry out the site investigation with seven collegues of other departments.

A Strawberry Day

For those who don't know what a strawberry day is, it is a current term that I have put into creation that refers to not a good but also not a bad day. You know, sometimes when you eat a strawberry it's nice and sweet, and some times when you eat them they're sour as can be, and sometimes you get one that's just in between sweet and sour, and it's just good enough to not spit out. That's what a strawberry day is, it's in between good and bad. And it just so happens that on this strawberry day, I went strawberry picking.

Chinese, and travel

Now, I learned Chinese in Beijing, that means I learned my Chinese with all the R’s, my first time hearing Chinese was in Beijing and I kinda thought it sounded like a bunch of dogs barking at each other. Ruf ruf ruf ruf ruf. But hey that’s how I started Chinese, so in 2009 when I came to Yangshuo to start teaching, and to learn Chinese, I wasn’t even remotely used to their Chinese. None of the R’s I fell in love with, or for that matter really good Mandarin. At that time hearing the difference between Northern Mandarin and Southern Mandarin was like hearing a true New Yorker speaking his form of English, and hearing someone from the deep deep South in a swamp in the middle of nowhere’s English.

Thanks to the peculiar karst landform, Guilin especially Yangshuo is endowed with abundant scenery made up of karst hills in various shapes, while some of them are more than landscapes. In other words, it is no exaggeration to say that you can find a hill suitable for climbing wherever you stand in Yangshuo. Thus, no airport, no railway, but that doesn’t stop climbing lovers from all over the world from rushing to Yangshuo every year.

An ancient stone town by Li River, Guilin

At the Yangmeiling (杨梅岭) of Putao (葡萄) Town of Yangshuo County there hides a small stone town with four stone gates, which need 3-4 hours to walk through all of them. Embraced by continuous mountains, this ancient stone town is apparently isolated from the bustling and hustling outside world. Thanks to that, it still looks like an unaffected Shangri-la where the local live a simple and autarkical life and remains a wonderful destination for hiking lovers.

Around 11 km apart from the county seat of Yangshuo, the Yulong Bridge Bamboo Rafting Scenic Spot at Yulong Village of Baisha Town, the first and only tourism observation in China set up by the World Travel Organization on July 26, 2005, is also known as the highlight section for bamboo rafting in Yangshuo. Built in 1412, Yulong Bridge is the biggest single-arched bridge in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the origin that the name of the picturesque Yulong River comes from.

Looking for a weekend that differentiates itself by its activities and highlights, I spent the last hours of a previous weekend in Yangshuo looking for some new attractions on August 6th, actually the last weekend I spent in China.

Li River Crown Cave: a "Chinese spotlight" on ancient rock formations

Finding some interesting activities around Guilin vicinity is one of the easiest things to do, the topography and natural sceneries of this area of China being such a jewel. Living in Guilin in order to study Chinese, I woke up on a Saturday morning with no plans at all for the day except going out with friends and have some good time. Our decision was to discover all together a famous scenic spot of the city that our teachers were talking about during the lessons: the Li River Crown Cave (Guanyan, 冠岩). Bottle of water and snacks checked, we left by bus - the easiest way I've taken so far to travel in Guangxi Province - for the scenic area is located at about 29 km downstream from Guilin city, on the banks of the Li River.
