September the 3rd, 2009, a special day in China, the Chinese Zhongyuan Festival comes. For Chinese people, there are two kinds of calendars we are using among centuries, the solar calendar and the lunar one, the solar one is the same date as the one we usually talk about in our daily lives while the lunar one was commonly used in the old China but is still being used by many people to record their birthdays, the date and it is even used to judge the lucky level on each day and it is used to keep the agricultural seasons for the farmers. Today is the July 15 of the lunar calendar, the traditional Chinese festival today is also called the Hungry Ghost. I have witnessed the celebration activities in Guilin. ...
TV-Commercial for Guilin
2009-05-19 | Life in Guilin
Last Thursday my colleague Sandy came to me and asked if I were interested in acting in a TV-advertisement for Guilin. A friend of her had asked her for a foreign actress. Of course I agreed to this idea, because I thought it could be a funny thing to do.
I Love Guilin Mifan!
2009-05-12 | China Food
If you come to Guilin, you should not miss one thing: to taste Guilin Mifan Guilin Rice Noodle. It is mostly served in those small places which remind me of garages, and which do not look very clean for western standards. The price is very low, usually it costs 2,50RMB. Then you get a metal bowl with typical rice noodle. They have the same appearance as Spaghetti, but are brighter. The cook will ask you for the style you want to have it: with Jiurou (Beef), Zhurou (Pig) or sometimes even horsemeat (Marou). You will get some thin slices of this meat on top of your noodles. Then two different sauces and fried peanuts are added. When you receive the noodles, you can add chili, green beans, beet and chives....
An Afternoon at Hospital
2009-04-22 | Life in Guilin
It started one week ago, on Monday: I had an odd feeling around my left breast. Sometimes stabling while breathing, sometimes a dragging pain, sometimes I felt my heart beating, sometimes everything was all right. Especially when I was among others and enjoying myself, I was fine. But however, I kept thinking about it and started to worry. Even if I disliked the idea of going to a doctor who did not have German hygienic standards and equipment, I asked my colleague You Jia Jia to go to hospital with me on Thursday. After lunch we took a taxi to Guilin People's Hospital, which is close to the Sheraton Hotel.
Eating out in Guilin
2009-04-08 | China Food
Even if I like Chinese food, I have to admit that sometimes I am tried of eating rice all the time (well, not all the time, but pretty often ;-) ). Thanks to my colleagues and my friends in Guilin I get to know more and more places where one gets western food. Of course, you can't compare it to what you are used to, but after some time it will be an apreciatedchange to get italian noodels or a pizza....
In late March, I was so lucky to have chance to explore southwest of Hunan province, my colleagues and me, we drove car by ourselves, on the long way, we driving or stopping, absolutely enjoying the wild trip which we want to discover. It was like a dream to come true, or adventure, anyway, it was my first time to experience such kind of trip, I was like a young child to find everything with full of curiosity, I tried my best to feel and touch all with my eyes, nose and heartthen I found life is just experience or a long trip, you never know next stop or scenic spot, without any hesitation, just go ahead and let it be. I think I learned a lot from the trip, not only enjoying the trip very much, but I understand traveling deeply....
A weekend in Yangshuo
2009-04-08 | Life in Guilin
When my friend Flo called me to tell me that he would come and visit me for the weekend, I was very excited. We decided to visit Yangshuo, a city close to Guilin, as the nature there was said to be very beautiful. So on Saturday morning we took the cruise ship to get to Yangshuo. The tour was during four hours and included a Western-Chinese lunch buffet. As the sun was shining we spent most of the time on top of the boat to enjoy the mountains surrounding us and to take pictures. It was a very enjoyable time. Arriving in Yangshuo, we nearly were overrun by elderly women offering bamboo boat tours, flowers or bike tours (Wo bu yao! means I dont want that!). ...

Already being in Guilin for one week, I so far got to know the district of the office and once went to the center with my colleagues.Seven Star District is very cute, and by bus you reach the center within 10 minutes. However, it is not a typical place for tourists to visit and therefore I am stared at nearly all the time when being on the street....
