Huangmei Opera, formerly named Huangmei Melodies, has a history of 200 years. Originated in the tea-collecting songs in the region of Huangmei, Hubei Province, it incorporates the folk songs in Anhui, Hubei and Jiangxi Province. It takes the best parts of ancient Qingyang Melody and came into being around the area of Anqing, Anhui Province. Huangmei Opera excels in expressing people's feelings and modelling various personalities. It is not only loved by local people, but by international friends as well. It is praised as China's country music.

As to the music aspect, the early performances of Huangmei Operas can be described as "three strikes and seven singings". Since the 1930s, in addition to the accompaniment of percussion instruments, some people try to use Jinghu to perform. After that some artists try to do the accompaniment by using Erhu and Gaohu. Until the early times of establishing of People's Republic of China, Gaohu as the main form of instrument was fixed gradually.

Initially, Huangmei Opera was noted for 'Liangxiaoxi' (two-role drama) and 'San-xiaoxi' (three-role drama) but then under the influence of Qingyang Tune and Hui Tune it gradually became a theatrical form which could present full-length works. Its tunes still keep the true flavor of folk songs, beautiful and touching and singing while dancing also continues to be a feature of its acting style. So that are the reasons why Huangmei Opera has greatly developed and been warmly welcomed by the audience.
