The Great Wall of China, one of the most famous Chinese construction, was built mainly to protect the Chinese Empire from invaders from the Mongolians. It stretches over 1,500 miles and extends from Gansu in the west to the Yellow sea in the east. It is believed to be built between 246 and 209 B. Hutong, a kind of famous Chinese construction, is an ancient city alley or lane typical in Beijing, where hutongs run into the several thousand. Surrounding the Forbidden City, many were built during the Yuan (1206-1341), Ming (1368-1628) and Qing (1644-1908) dynasties. Many hotongs were placed close to the palace to the east and west and arranged in orderly fashion along the streets. Most of the residents of these hutongs were noble and royal people.
Traditionally most urban Chinese used to live in quadrangles called Siheyuan or "four-side enclosed courtyards." These courts, as the name implies, are formed by inward-facing houses on four sides, closed in by enclosure walls. Siheyuan was a common feature of traditional Chinese construction in the ancient, not only residences but ancient palaces, government offices, temples and monasteries were built basically on the pattern of the Siheyuan, a common feature of traditional Chinese architecture.
The Tiananmen Square, located in the center of Beijing, is said to be the biggest square in the world, with 880 meters from north to south, 500 meters from east to west, and total area of 440,000 square meters. It can hold one million people. Over several hundred years, in front of the Tiananmen, many democracy meetings and demonstrations are held. Tens of thousands of people come here each day. The Tiananmen Square is listed top among Beijing's 16 scenic spots.
