Aksu of Xinjiang is a city in the Chinese province of Xinjiang and the capital of Aksu Prefecture. The name Aksu literally means white water, and is used for both the oasis town and the Aksu River. Aksu Prefecture is in warm temperate dry climate with the average temperature of 7-8 degree centigrade and little rainfall. However, the water flow in Aksu Prefecture is plenty including Aksu River and Tarim River. And Aksu is an important producing area of cotton and grains.
From the Former Han dynasty (125 BCE to 23 CE) at least until the early Tang dynasty (618-907 CE), Aksu was known as Gumo.
